Crohn’s disease can lead to many complications including diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, malabsorption of food and nutritional deficiencies, vomiting and more. Many people with Crohn’s disease who have had surgery in the past, still live full and rewarding lives and are still capable of doing many activities including sport diving.
For some divers with Crohn’s disease, many foods and medications can upset the stomach while diving. Therefore, some divers with the disease won’t eat or take any medication before diving due to the unknown effects. Divers with Crohn’s disease can also run into other complications such as sore joints and skin rashes.
It is important for divers with diarrhea to make sure that they take extra fluids in order to prevent dehydration. Diver’s with Crohn’s should also stay away from eating food that includes fruit, nuts, and spicy or fatty foods in order to prevent an upset stomach while diving.
